Information Technology
First of all a plug. If you are in need of advice on
computer systems or if you need to purchase computer systems get
in touch. It can only cost you money. It may cost
you more not to talk to those who have gone there before
you. Forget the usual model for computers. Leave the
server with us to look after and access it other the
www.
I need to come out of the closet. I just love
information technology. Wow. Never thought I could
come clean about it.
Wait a minute, this is a solicitors web site! Absolutely, and
I am one of those fuddy duddies who loves the law and really
enjoys the techie side. Looking forward to the cases to
combine both.
It may come as a disappointment for some that I praise the
strength and usefulness of DPS case management systems. It
is a truly great system that is so adaptable to the way that we
work that it makes it quite easy to work with and to amend and
improve at will. Of course, you need to be a programmer
(but only very basic (sic) skills required) and then it really takes
off.
With DPS my ambition would be to be part of a group to share
the ability to perfect the system. The cost can be too
high for just one firm to deal with.
PC's! Wow. Great to work with but............
Whenever I had to buy a new personal computer the problem was
finding the correct basic configuration with the best operating
system. Windows 2000 is the one for me but try to get Dell
to give you one. Forget it. Probably have to make do
with XP professional. When you get it the thing sits in a
corridor or a room and dominates it (due the sheer size of the
boxes) for a day or two (or
more likely a week) while you look for the few hours it will take
to configure it for your network.
Guess what. No more personal computers for me. I
have learned the joys of thin clients. (I can see that some
of you have the wrong image already.) A thin client is a
computer alternative. I bought another two today. It
took me just five minutes to set up both of them to be fully up
and running. Highly recommended. The reliability of
such machines looks to be excellent. I suddenly realised
that the real cost of a personal computer is so much more than
the money I hand over to Dell. If I only spent two hours
setting up a new computer I would usually be pleased. Five
minutes!!! They are so cheap that I can now have one or
more just sitting in storage until the next personal computer
gives trouble and then I just change it over. Two minutes
maximum and the person is back on line!
Technology can be such a boon to us. If you need
assistance because the times your system goes down means that
someone needs to come in to fix it, you could always talk
to me. We may be able to do a deal with housing your
server, fixing your DPS (if you use it) and setting you up with
thin clients to access the server over broadband. Be
amazed. The cost has to be well worth it for the peace of
mind and the reliability. The cost may actually be less
than you are presently spending on your network. You do
not have a network? Shame. Investigate what we can
offer and then decide to spend. Worried about accessing
the server over the www? Don't be. The reality is
that the telephone system is one of the more dependable parts of
the technology infrastructure. If that goes down you
probably go home anyway. Better to have someone looking after
your server to fix that quickly. Which is the more likely
to let you down? Got it.
